Surgical Gynecology

                               Վիրաբուժական գինեկոլոգիա

The department performs surgical treatment of gynecological diseases in both traditional (laparotomic) and laparoscopic (abdominal and vaginal) methods.

Gynecological laparoscopic surgery in Armenia was first performed in our center in 1974. Currently, the department actively implements new minimally invasive (less-invasive) technologies used in surgical gynecology, particularly laparoscopic and hysteroscopic (uterine) surgery.

The department is equipped with modern Video Endoscopic complex "Karl Storz" (Germany).  A special computer, attached to the laparoscopic device, allows to record the surgical intervention in a video mode, which is very important for the quality control of the performed surgery. In case of intrauterine pathology suspicion, hysteroscopy is performed. Diagnostic hysteroscopy allows early detection of intrauterine pathologies (uterine submucosal myoma, endometrial hyperplasia), polyps, intra-uterine septum and adhesions. The department has gained extensive experience in hysteroscopic surgery.

Our department performs scheduled and urgent surgeries. Modern surgical materials and the latest equipment are widely used in surgical operations.

In the department of surgical gynecology the following surgical interventions are conducted using:

1. Laparoscopy

  • Diagnostic laparoscopy
  • Removal of tumor-like masses and cysts
  • Surgical treatment of polycystic ovarian syndrome
  • Treatment of common forms of endometriosis
  • Tube removal used to treat ectopic pregnancy and conservative surgery
  • Conservative myomectomy (uterine preserving removal of fibroids)
  • Salpingo- ovariolysis (separation of pelvic adhesions in infertility)
  • Salpingostomy (a procedure may be done to repair and to treat the damaged tube)
  • Operative sterilization
  • Laparoscopy assisted vaginal hysterectomy (LAVH)
  • Total laparoscopic hysterectomy
  • Subtotal laparoscopic hysterectomy (leaving the cervix intact)

2. Hysteroscopy (with laparoscopic access)

  • Separate medical-diagnostic abrasion of cervix and endometrial ablation (may be done to treat endometrial hyperplasia) - including histological and cytological examinations).
  • Hysteroscopy by using Hystero-resectoscope – removal of polyps, submucosal fibroids,  intrauterine septum and adhesions
  • Correction of congenital malformations
  • Demucosation of endometrium and endometrial ablation

3. Vaginal method

  • Vaginal hysterectomy without appendages at genital prolapse
  • Vaginal hysterectomy without/with appendages without genital prolapse
  • Electro-conization  of uterine cervix (cervical conization) with further histological examination
  • Anterior and posterior colpoperineorrhaphy with levator plastics (vaginoplasty)
  • Sling surgery (TVT, TOT) for treating urinary incontinence
  • Placement of Gynecare Prolift System - Anterior/Posterior/Total
  • Surgical treatment of vaginal and external genitalia formations
  • Hymenoplasty (the temporary surgical restoration of the hymen)
  • Plastic reconstructive surgery of congenital malformations of vagina and external genitaliaColpopoesis - formation of vaginal tube (in the absence of a congenital malformation)

4. Laparotomy

  • Total hysterectomy with/without appendages
  • Uterine amputation preserving the cervix
  • Abdominal hysterectomy with appendages/without appendages
  • Surgical interventions on appendages
  • Conservative myomectomy (uterine preserving removal of myoma nodules)

During the postoperative period, patients stay in comfortable wards, where highly experienced staff of gynecological department take care of the patients. 95% of surgeries are performed using less invasive methods, which allows the patient’s recover faster. All these surgeries are aimed to improve patient’s life quality. After leaving the hospital women are followed up by Outpatient Department of RCMCHP.
